I came across an important tech update that might affect many of us who use our phones for quick document scanning. Microsoft has announced that its popular scanning app, Microsoft Lens (formerly Office Lens), will be retired by the end of 2025.
September 15, 2025 – Retirement begins, and new installs will soon be blocked.
Mid-October 2025 – The app will no longer be available to download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Mid-November 2025 – Lens will be completely removed from app stores.
December 15, 2025 – Scanning features inside Lens will be disabled. You can still open the app to view old scans saved in MyScans, but you won’t be able to create new ones.
Microsoft is recommending users switch to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for scanning. However, it’s worth noting that some features from Lens are not yet available in Copilot, such as saving scans directly to OneNote, Word, or PowerPoint, business card scanning into OneNote, and accessibility tools like Read-Aloud or Immersive Reader.
If they’re saved in Lens, you can still access them via the MyScans section as long as the app remains installed.
If they’re stored in OneDrive, you’ll find them under My Creations in Copilot.
It’s a good idea to start getting familiar with Copilot’s scanning features now so the transition is smoother later this year. If you’ve been a long-time Lens user, this is definitely the right time to back up your scans and test out the new workflow.
