Darksiders 4 is launching with optional multiplayer functionality with up to four gamers, and will allegedly have local co-op in the form of split screen as well. Though few details are currently known about the long-awaited sequel, fans will be able to team up with up to three other friends to embody the Four Horsemen in Darksiders 4.

During the THQ Nordic showcase on August 1, Darksiders 4 was officially confirmed. A tried-and-true sequel to the original game, gamers will be able to play as the Four Horsemen in a story that picks up where Darksiders 1 left off 15 years ago.

Few gameplay details have been shared about the game so far, but it will feature robust combat, puzzle-solving, and traversal featuring all the Four Horsemen – War, Death, Fury, and Strife – as playable characters.

Darksiders 4 Has Four-Player Online Co-Op, Split Screen

However, one detail in particular stood out to fans: Darksiders 4 will have co-op. The listings for Darksiders 4 on the PlayStation and Xbox stores as well as Steam confirmed that the sequel can be played alone or with friends, featuring optional online co-op for between two and four players. Additionally, IGN’s initial announcement for Darksiders 4 stated it would also have split-screen functionality, while Push Square reported that local multiplayer would support up to two gamers at once.

Interestingly enough, the game's official website itself makes no mention of co-op whatsoever, despite the fact it would ostensibly be considered a major selling point for Darksiders 4. The store listings only make mention of online multiplayer, so aspects of this feature, including local co-op via split screen, may change or be omitted before the full release of the game.

Regardless, it sounds like multiplayer groups will be able to ride forth with all of the Four Horsemen at once, fulfilling a fantasy that has been a long time coming in the Darksiders franchise. Fans will have to wait for more information to find out exactly how co-op will work in Darksiders 4, and how single-player will differ.

At present, Darksiders 4 has no confirmed release dates or windows, so it may be a while before players learn anything more about it. Likewise, the dearth of Darksiders 4 gameplay information and footage implies it is still pretty early in development. Fans may have to wait until 2026, 2027, or even later to finally get their hands on this long-awaited sequel, but at least they can look forward to riding forth with their friends when it does finally release
