The Government of India issued a commemorative Rs 1000 coin in 2025, marking the 1000th anniversary of Emperor Rajendra Chola I’s legendary naval expedition—an event that showcased the height of the Chola dynasty’s maritime power and cultural influence in Southeast Asia.

Commemoration and Coin Details

To celebrate this millennium milestone, the Ministry of Finance released a Rs 1000 commemorative coin in July 2025 during the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at Gangaikonda Cholapuram—the capital and architectural marvel built by Rajendra Chola after his victorious campaigns.

Key features of the coin include:

Obverse: The Lion Capital of Ashoka with “Satyameva Jayate,” “Bharat” in Devanagari, “INDIA” in English, the Rupee symbol, and denomination “1000”.

Reverse: A detailed depiction of Rajendra Chola I’s naval expedition, with inscriptions “1000 YEARS OF NAVAL EXPEDITION OF EMPEROR RAJENDRA CHOLA - I” in English and Devanagari.

The coin is circular, crafted from 99.9% pure silver, weighs 40 grams, is 44 mm in diameter, and features 200 serrations on the edge.


Legacy and Modern Recognition

The release of this commemorative coin serves to remind the nation of its storied maritime prowess and the strategic, economic, and cultural importance of Indian naval expeditions long before European colonial adventurers appeared. It not only honors Emperor Rajendra Chola’s historic achievements but also seeks to rekindle public appreciation for Tamil Nadu’s—and India’s—civilizational influence an d maritime heritage.
