The Steam player count for Marvel Rivals has fallen off dramatically since the game's peak in January, with nearly 90% of the game's playerbase seeming to have left the shooter behind. The team-based hero shooter featuring a wide cast of beloved Marvel characters took the gaming world by storm following its launch as one of the hottest competitive online games.
The shooter only needed three days to eclipse 10 million players worldwide and earned more than $135 million within just the first month following its release. However, Marvel Rivals' player count today is a far cry from its peak.
While Marvel Rivals saw a meteoric rise to popularity following its debut, the months since its launch have not been without issues for the game. Marvel Rivals has seen an uptick in negative reviews from fans throughout recent months, with many attributing the game's issues to poor performance and balancing.
Developer NetEase Games also recently made a major change to Marvel Rivals' matchmaking system, limiting the team size players can queue with in higher ranks and receiving significant backlash from the community. Now, Marvel Rivals' recent struggles have extended to its player counts on Steam.
The decline of Marvel Rivals could be owed to many factors, some of which are entirely beyond the developers' control. New games often see a notable decline in players when the excitement around the game's launch dies down, with players moving on to other games following Marvel Rivals. Many of the game's updates have likely taken a toll on the player count, with players repeatedly complaining about Marvel Rivals' balancing as NetEase continues to add new playable characters.
While Marvel Rivals has seen a sharp decline in its playerbase, NetEase Games still has plenty for players who stick around with the Marvel shooter. Recent rumors have heavily implied that beloved antihero Deadpool may soon be coming to Marvel Rivals, with several voicelines discovered to mention the Wade Wilson hero.
Marvel Rivals is also gearing up for the launch of its next competitive season, with Season 4 set to officially begin in early September.
