  • Chambered for 5.56×45mm NATO rounds
  • Gas-operated, rotating bolt design
  • Modes of fire: Single-shot & 3-round burst

3/ 🇮🇳 Service History:

First inducted into the Indian Armed Forces in the late 1990s, INSAS was a major step towards self-reliance in small arms manufacturing.

4/ 🔍 Features:

  • Transparent polymer magazine (to check remaining rounds)
  • Lightweight build compared to older rifles
  • Versions include INSAS Rifle & INSAS Light Machine Gun (LMG)

5/ ⚠️ Criticism & Challenges:

Though innovative, INSAS faced reliability issues:

  • Magazine cracks in cold climates
  • Oil spraying during bursts
  • Malfunctions during prolonged use

6/ 🔄 Replacement Phase:

Due to performance concerns, INSAS is gradually being phased out in favor of more reliable imported rifles like AK-203 (Russia) & SIG716 (USA).

7/ 🌟 Legacy:

INSAS remains a milestone in India’s defense R&D journey – symbolizing the first big step towards indigenous small arms development. It paved the way for the next-gen Indian rifles.

8/ 💬 What do you think – should India upgrade INSAS further or continue with modern imports until our own rifles reach world-class reliability?
