Marvel’s Wolverine resurfaced at Wednesday’s PlayStation State of Play stream, and in a big way — Sony revealed a fall 2026 release window alongside a new trailer showcasing just how violent we can expect Insomniac’s next Marvel endeavor to be.

"I'm not a violent man," Wolverine says in a voice-over, just before he ruthlessly slices through and stabs several enemies throughout the trailer. Omega Red makes an appearance, teasing what will surely be a vicious boss fight, as well as the shape-changing Mystique.

Marvel’s Wolverine was announced four years ago in September 2021. The announcement trailer showcased Logan in a run-down bar in Madripoor (presumably the game’s setting), and Easter eggs like “HLK 181” on a license plate — a reference to the Marvel comic in which Wolverine made his first full appearance, The Incredible Hulk #181. Since that initial reveal in 2021, we haven’t heard any further official word on the game until now. Unfortunately, as part of the December 2023 ransomware hack against Insomniac, assets from the game leaked online, alongside sensitive employee data.

"The best there is at what he does" has appeared in recent team-up games, like Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 3 and Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Insomniac’s Wolverine will be the mutant’s first solo outing since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was actually pretty good despite it's links to a terrible movie.

Insomniac is well-versed at crafting compelling games starring Marvel characters at this point; Wolverine will be released after the studio has launched three acclaimed Spider-Man games (and hopefully a fourth is on the way).

Marvel's Wolverine is the next major project from Insomniac Games, and is scheduled to launch approximately three years after the studio's previous project, Marvel's Spider-Man 2

True to its title, Marvel's Wolverine will put players in the shoes of James "Logan" Howlett, better known by his X-Men codename of Wolverine. The upcoming project from Insomniac Games is a third-person action title that will also feature an ensemble cast of Marvel and X-Men characters, though further details about the game's plot remain elusive. Although Marvel's Wolverine was first revealed in September 2021, no further development updates about the project were revealed by Insomniac. Despite the lack of news, previous rumors stated that Marvel's Wolverine was still on track for a 2026 release.

Marvel's Wolverine Release Window Confirmed By Insomniac

Thankfully, the September 24 State of Play proved past rumors correct. Insomniac closed the show by revealing that Marvel's Wolverine will launch on PS5 in Fall 2026. A trailer that showed both gameplay and cutscene footage was shown off, using video captured on the PS5 Pro. The trailer begins with Logan tearing apart an enemy combatant with his adamantium claws, which will be the basis of the game's combat system. Along with civilian clothing, Wolverine also donned his traditional yellow X-Men uniform and mask. The trailer featured Wolverine riding a motorcycle through the Canadian wilderness, as indicated by a road sign pointing to the town of Squamish, British Columbia.

The combat system will allow players to quickly dash between enemies and unleash a flurry of claw strikes and kicks. Aside from fighting, Wolverine can run and jump between buildings, using his claws for leverage. In a behind-the-scenes developer video, Insomniac revealed that Australian actor Liam McIntyre will portray Wolverine. McIntyre's previous work includes his role as JD Fenix in the Gears of War series and as Taron Malicos in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Compared to past Insomniac titles, Marvel's Wolverine will have heavy doses of action that should warrant a Mature rating from the ESRB. It will also have appearances from other Marvel and X-Men characters, such as Mystique, Omega Red, and The Sentinels. Insomniac stated that further details about Marvel's Wolverine would be revealed in Spring 2026.

Marvel's Wolverine joins a growing roster of AAA titles that will launch in 2026, such as Grand Theft Auto 6, Resident Evil Requiem, and 007 First Light. It remains to be seen when precisely fans can sink their claws into Insomniac's highly anticipated game.
