Twitch has finally added the long-requested feature of being able to rewind a stream, but there are some catches involved. Both Twitch streamers and their viewers will need to do a few things in order to access this new feature.

Though Twitch is arguably the leader of livestreaming platforms, other services have offered some options and features that have been missing from the platform. On YouTube, for example, streams can actively be rewound, allowing users to rewatch highlights or catch up on anything they might have missed. Users have been asking for a similar feature to be added to Twitch for a while, so those fans may be happy to know it's finally available.

Twitch Adds Rewind Feature, But With Some Caveats

On September 25, Twitch announced the Stream Rewind feature, which is available now. Twitch viewers can now pause a stream without missing anything, rewind to a prior moment, and jump back to the real-time stream via a "Live" button that is now on the video player. However, the catch is that this feature is only available to certain types of viewers and streamers, and streamers have to take action on their part in order to use it at all. By default, this feature is turned off on Twitch channels.

On the streamer's side, there are some requirements for this feature. To start, Twitch streamers need to be Affiliated or Partnered with the platform, and then activate it manually on their end. For viewers, users need to be subscribed to the channel they're watching or be a Turbo subscriber.

It's possible that this will be made easier and less restrictive in the future. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy noted in a recent broadcast that these restrictions are currently in place because Twitch is trying to figure out how to make the feature available without it being used to skip ads. He didn't give a timeline as to when the feature might roll out for unsubscribed viewers, however.

While this feature has been a long time coming, fans may still be frustrated with the current limitations. Comparatively, on services like YouTube, live streams can be rewound without the need to subscribe or sign up for a service like YouTube Premium. Hopefully, users don't have to wait too long for Twitch to iron out the kinks, and the Stream Rewind function will be made available to more users and streamers in the near future.
