Udaipur, Rajasthan, is celebrated as the “City of Lakes,” but at its heart lies the awe-inspiring City Palace, a sprawling fort complex that beautifully showcases the regal glory and architectural prowess of the Mewar dynasty. Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, this palace marks not just a physical but a historic shift—when the capital of Mewar moved from Chittorgarh to Udaipur.

A Fortress Built for Kings

Nestled on a ridge beside Lake Pichola, the City Palace was strategically placed for natural defense against repeated Mughal invasions. Over 22 generations contributed new palaces and courtyards, making the complex a seamless blend of Rajasthani, Mughal, European, and Oriental styles. Its grand façade stretches 244 meters long and rises over 30 meters in height, carved almost entirely from marble and granite.

The palace's interiors stun visitors with intricate mirror work, elaborate murals, colored glass windows, silver detailing, and delicate inlays. Each courtyard, chowk, and passage was designed with zigzag corridors to thwart surprise enemy attacks - a testimony to the turbulent history of Rajasthan.

Highlights Within the Palace

- Badi Mahal (Garden Palace): Built on a 27-meter-high rock, this palace boasts breathtaking city and lake views. It's renowned for its carved pillars, rare paintings, stained glass, and as the setting for grand festival celebrations.
