  • Immigrated to Canada in 1870, later moved to Boston, USA to teach at schools for the deaf.

  • Met Mabel Hubbard, a deaf student, in 1873.
  • Married in 1877; had four children (two sons died in infancy).

📞 Invention of the Telephone

  • Early focus: harmonic telegraph – sending multiple messages over a single wire.
  • Inspired by reeds and tuning forks responding to sound frequencies.
  • Filed telephone patent February 14, 1876, hours before rival Elisha Gray.
  • First intelligible words (March 10, 1876):

“Mr. Watson—come here—I want to see you.”

  • Demonstrated telephone publicly at Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, 1876.

  • Died August 2, 1922, at his Nova Scotia estate.
