YouTube Rolls Out New Timer Feature to Limit Endless Shorts Scrolling

Hello Questers!

YouTube has introduced a new Timer feature within its mobile application aimed at helping users manage the amount of time they spend on Shorts.

The new tool addresses the common issue of "endless scrolling" that often leads users to lose track of time while viewing short-form videos. The Timer allows users to set a daily time limit for how long they can scroll through the Shorts feed.

Once the set time limit is reached, a dismissible prompt will appear, notifying the user that scrolling on the Shorts feed has been paused for the remainder of the day.

This move follows past criticisms aimed at social media platforms for their 'endless scroll' design, which research suggests can contribute to negative mental health effects such as increased anxiety and reduced concentration. YouTube had previously implemented similar features, including "Take a Break" and "Bedtime Reminder," to encourage users to manage their overall viewing time on the platform.

The company also announced plans to expand the Timer feature to parental controls later in the year. When implemented, parents will be able to set time limits on Shorts from their own accounts, and the prompt children see after reaching the limit will be non-dismissible.
