Prakash Padukone is a legendary Indian badminton player who redefined the sport in India with his historic achievements and graceful gameplay. Known for his calm demeanor and strategic brilliance, Padukone became the first Indian ever to win the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships in 1980, the same year he reached the coveted World No. 1 ranking.

Born to Ramesh Padukone, who served as the Secretary of the Mysore Badminton Association, Prakash was introduced to the sport at an early age. His father’s passion for badminton became the foundation of his own journey toward global success.

By 1972, his aggressive and refined playing style earned him both the Indian National Junior and Senior titles, a rare double victory that announced his arrival on the national scene.
  • National Dominance (1972–1979):
  • From 1972 onward, Padukone reigned supreme at the Indian National Championships, winning the title seven consecutive times, setting an unmatched domestic record. His dominance and dedication transformed Indian badminton’s competitive spirit.
  • International Breakthrough (1978–1979):
  • In 1978, Prakash clinched his first major international title — the Commonwealth Games Men’s Singles Gold in Edmonton, Canada, a milestone moment for Indian badminton.
  • The following year, he triumphed at the prestigious “Evening of Champions” tournament held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, further solidifying his international reputation.
  • Golden Year (1980):
  • The year 1980 marked the pinnacle of Padukone’s career. He won the Danish Open, the Swedish Open, and then created history by becoming the first Indian ever to win the All England Open Badminton Championships, defeating Indonesia’s Liem Swie King in the final. This extraordinary feat propelled him to the World No. 1 ranking, making him a global icon of the sport.
