The two-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) segment in India is rapidly gaining ground. According to recent data, electric scooters account for the vast majority of EV two-wheelers — about 88-90% of all electric two-wheelers in India. While petrol scooters still dominate overall, the share of EV scooters is climbing fast, especially in urban areas. So these are the best EV brands that are providing the best EV scooters.

1. Ather

Company & positioning: Ather Energy is a Bangalore-based EV specialist which has been focussing purely on electric scooters. For instance, the model Ather 450 is one of their earlier mainstream products.

What stands out:

  • Strong technology focus: good battery, good build, faster acceleration.
  • For example, the Ather 450 claims a range of ~146 km (IDC) and top speed ~90 km/h.
  • They are also working on expanding their retail/service network.
  • Points to check:
  • As a “pure EV brand”, service network and aftermarket support may still be catching up in smaller towns.
  • Premium pricing relative to simpler models.
  • Good for: Riders who want a top-spec EV scooter with good tech and are willing to pay a bit more.
  • Model to note: Ather 450 / newer variants.

2. TVS (iQube)

Company & positioning: The legacy two-wheeler manufacturer TVS has entered the EV scooter segment with the iQube series.

What stands out:

  • Solid service/dealer network (given TVS's presence) helps in reliability of ownership.
  • For example, the iQube Electric offers a range up to about 150 km (per one review) and has “smart and connected” features.
  • Pricing starts lower than the top premium EVs.
  • Points to check:
  • Some feature compromises may be there compared to top-tier EVs.
  • Battery / range may be modest compared with very premium models.
  • Good for: Riders who want a trusted brand, easier service support and balanced EV scooter.
  • Model to note: TVS iQube Electric.

3. Bajaj (Chetak)

Company & positioning: Bajaj Auto is a major two-wheeler manufacturer that has entered into the EV scooter segment with the Chetak EV.

What stands out:

  • Strong brand legacy which can boost trust for buyers.
  • For example: The Chetak EV 2025 model has a real-world range of ~100–113 km in certain modes, with 3.2 kWh battery.
  • Launched several upgraded models, good build quality described in some sources.
  • Points to check:
  • The range is still moderate (vs premium EVs).
  • Because it’s still a newer segment for the brand, check local service/support.
  • Good for: Riders looking for an EV scooter from a trusted legacy brand, decent build and decent range for city usage.
  • Model to note: Bajaj Chetak EV.

4. Simple (Simple Energy)

Company & positioning: Bengaluru-based startup; the model Simple One is their flagship EV scooter.

What stands out:

  • Good specs: e.g., Simple OneS variant offers claimed ~181 km IDC range with top speed ~105 km/h.
  • Strong feature set: 7-inch TFT, connectivity, smart features.
  • Points to check:
  • Being a newer company, service/support network may be still growing.
  • The pricing for high-spec models may be higher.
  • Good for: Riders who want premium features, higher performance, are early adopters and willing to go with a startup brand.
  • Model to note: Simple One / Simple OneS.

5. River (Honourable Mention)

Company & positioning: River EV (Bengaluru-based) launched the River Indie electric scooter.

What stands out:

  • Price point is competitive: e.g., launched at ~ Rs 1.25 lakh ex-showroom for 120 km range ~4 kWh battery.
  • Unique design “SUV of scooters” tag, good storage space, decent features.
  • Points to check:
  • Smaller/newer brand so service network may be thinner.
  • Range and specs are more moderate than top-tier EVs.
  • Good for: Riders looking for value, good build, moderate range and are okay with a newer brand.
  • Model to note: River Indie.

My Verdict: Which One to Pick?

If I had to pick based on balanced criteria (brand trust + range + performance + service) I'd lean towards:

  • Most reliable safe pick → TVS iQube: because legacy brand + decent network.
  • Best tech/performance pick → Ather: if budget allows and you want top features.
  • Strong brand + design + build pick → Bajaj Chetak.
  • Feature-rich startup pick → Simple One: if you're comfortable with a startup.
  • Value pick → River Indie: good mix of price + features + acceptable range.
