The celebrations for Ganesh Chaturthi have commenced with much fervour and joy over the next ten days. The planning for the huge celebration has already begun. Throughout Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees dress up in new garments and flock to pandals and Lord Ganesha's temples to pray and feast. Ganeshotsav is traditionally celebrated in August or September. According to the Hindu calendar,
VinayakChaturthi is celebrated today, August 31, and Ganesh Visarjan is on September 9.
According to Hindu legend, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha in the absence of Lord Shiva to defend her as she bathed. When Lord Shiva attempted to enter the hall where she was bathing, he was prevented by Ganesha, and they argued. Ganesha, being an obedient son, obeyed his mother's orders and did not allow Lord Shiva to enter the hall. Lord Shiva became enraged and severed Ganesha's head from his body. When Goddess Parvati saw this, she turned into her Kali avatar and threatened to destroy the universe in rage.
Significance:
Ganesh Chaturthi symbolises Lord Ganeshas rebirth and represents new beginnings. In the 10-days-long celebration, devotees worship the god of knowledge, wisdom and prosperity before beginning any significant work.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Ganesh Chaturthi. May God Ganesha shower happiness and prosperity on you.
