Minisforum has launched the MS-R1, a compact 1.7-liter ARM-based mini workstation that supports UEFI boot. This makes it the first device of its kind to allow direct installation of mainstream Linux distributions and virtualization tools without relying on custom firmware or bootloaders.

Minisforum MS-R1 Specifications

The MS-R1 is powered by the new CIX CP8180 processor. It features 12 cores and 12 threads, with a base clock speed of 2.6GHz and a 28W TDP. The processor includes a built-in NPU that delivers 28.8 TOPS, while the total AI performance reaches 45 TOPS. The device is designed for local inference, Android VM containers, and edge computing tasks.

The Minisforum MS-R1 supports up to 64GB of LPDDR5 memory running at 5500MHz. It includes ECC (Error-Correcting Code) support, which enhances data reliability but reduces usable memory by one-eighth when enabled. For storage, Minisforum includes a 1TB NVMe SSD in some configurations. It also supports expansion via a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot with optional adapters for U.2 drives.

For connectivity, the mini-PC includes dual 10GbE Ethernet ports using Realtek RTL8127 controllers, along with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support via an M.2 2230 module. Display outputs include one HDMI 2.0 port and two USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode, supporting up to 4K at 120Hz.

The workstation features a full-size PCIe x16 slot (wired at x8), which allows installation of discrete GPUs, high-speed NICs, or additional storage controllers. Minisforum targets professionals and researchers working on virtualization, Android emulation, and AI development.
