🧠 Thread 27: Why People Fear Being Misunderstood

Being misunderstood feels threatening because humans are social beings. When our intentions are misread, the brain interprets it as a risk to belonging and acceptance.

People don’t just want to be heard. They want to be understood correctly.

This fear exists because:

• Identity is tied to how others see us

• Misunderstanding can damage trust

• Being misjudged feels unfair

• Clarifying takes emotional effort

That’s why people overexplain, defend themselves unnecessarily, or stay silent altogether. Both are attempts to control how they are perceived.

Misunderstanding hurts more when effort is involved. The more you try to explain yourself, the more painful it feels when it fails.

Understanding this helps you stop chasing perfect clarity and accept that not everyone will see you accurately.

Being misunderstood is uncomfortable.

Being obsessed with preventing it is exhausting
