Chrome’s new vertical tabs feature, currently available in Chrome Canary, is a major usability upgrade—letting users fit far more tabs on screen, organize them with groups, and access hidden tools more easily. While still experimental and unstable, it modernizes Chrome’s interface to compete with Edge and Firefox.
How to Enable Vertical Tabs in Chrome
- Download Chrome Canary (experimental build).
- Enter chrome://flags/#vertical-tabs in the address bar.
- Set Vertical Tabs → Enabled.
- Restart the browser.
- Right-click above the address bar → Move tabs to the side.
- To revert, right-click the vertical tab bar → Move tabs to the top.
Key Benefits
- More tabs visible: Up to 29 vertical tabs fit with readable names, compared to ~12 in horizontal layout.
- Better organization: Tab groups drop down neatly, with shortcuts placed next to bookmarks.
- Extra buttons:
- Collapse tab bar into slim icons.
- Tab search button (previously hidden behind Ctrl+Shift+A).
- New tab button at the bottom.
- Bookmark integration: Convert tab groups into bookmark folders directly.
