Warhorse Studios has officially released the long-rumored next-gen update for the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The 1.9.7 update is huge, and finally brings Kingdom Come: Deliverance to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It's a free upgrade, meaning players who already own the game on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can enjoy the new version on current-gen consoles at no charge.
The original Kingdom Come: Deliverance was released in 2018 as the debut title from Czech studio Warhorse Studios. It was an ambitious RPG set in the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia, taking a historical approach when many similar role-playing games were rooted in fantasy. Although Kingdom Come: Deliverance was met with a solid critical reception, its hardcore mechanics weren't for everyone, and as Warhorse Studios' first game, it was still a little rough around the edges.
Its 2025 sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, was met with enormous critical and commercial success, and was even nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025. The success of the sequel has reignited interest in the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance all over again.
In an exciting trailer and patch notes posted to the Deep Silver website, Kingdom Come: Deliverance officially shadow-dropped the long-rumored next-gen update, bringing the game to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The main improvement is the massively improved visuals. Now, PC's Ultra quality is the baseline for current-gen console versions, with asset quality increased across the board. The native resolution has been increased to 2560x1440, although it also upscales to 3840x2160. Kingdom Come: Deliverance now runs at 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the patch notes stating that CryEngine has received "optimizations tailored for the PS5 and Xbox Series hardware" to enable this.
There's good news for players who had an active Kingdom Come: Deliverance playthrough on previous-gen consoles, too. Existing owners of the game will receive the next-gen update completely free, and it even has save game transfer, meaning players won't have to start their playthrough from the beginning on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. There are a bunch of other small bug fixes and improvements, as well as the addition of Czech and Japanese voice-overs for the game. The 1.9.7 patch has also been released for the PC version of the game, although, for obvious reasons, it does not include the console-specific changes.
There have been rumors of a next-gen update for Kingdom Come: Deliverance for a while now, but Warhorse Studios remained radio-silent on the topic. Its release doesn't come as a massive surprise, given the previous leaks, but it's still good to see it come to fruition. With the sequel's success, now could be the right time to hop in and experience the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which has conveniently just arrived on Xbox Game Pass, too.
Last year, Warhorse Studios released what was claimed to be the final DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. It's not clear what the future holds for the developer at this point, although its recent success gives it the runway to take on even more ambitious projects in the coming years. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is one of the best RPGs of recent years, so regardless of what Warhorse Studios does next, whether it be more KCD or something entirely new, it's sure to have a new legion of anticipating fans along for the ride.
