INDIAN GAUR – The Gentle Giant of the Forest 🐃


• The Indian gaur is the largest wild bovine in the world, even bigger than a buffalo.


• Found mainly in Indian forests, especially Western Ghats, Central India, and Northeast.

• Adult males can weigh up to 1,000 kg and stand nearly 6 feet tall at the shoulder.


• Known for their muscular build, dark coat, and white “stocking” legs.


• Despite their size, gaurs are usually calm and shy unless threatened.

• They play a vital role in forests by maintaining grassland balance.


• Conservation status: Vulnerable due to habitat loss and human conflict.


FACt : A herd is usually led by a dominant female,                              not a male!
