Foucault used a simple pendulum to prove that Earth rotates. A long pendulum swings in a fixed direction, but over time, the Earth rotates beneath it.

To an observer, it looks like the direction of the swing is slowly changing, but in reality, the ground is moving.

This was one of the first direct visual proofs of Earth’s rotation.

but actually the table is moving.
