Capturing Depth: Portrait Musings with the iQOO 15

There is something incredibly satisfying about a camera that just gets portraits. Lately, I've been putting the iQOO 15 through its paces, and instead of focusing strictly on performance benchmarks or speed, I wanted to let the camera do the talking through some actual glass.

I recently took the device out for a spin to capture some casual portrait clicks, and honestly? The results genuinely surprised me.

The Magic is in the Separation

When you're trying to capture the essence of a subject, the edge detection has to be flawless. What struck me immediately with these frames is how natural the falloff is. Instead of that harsh, artificial "cut-out" look you sometimes get with mobile portrait modes, the software here works brilliantly with the hardware to create a progressive, creamy background blur (bokeh) that mimics a DSLR prime lens.

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the device:

Notice how the facial features remain perfectly proportioned without the standard wide-angle distortion.

Even as the natural light started to fade, the sensor managed to keep skin tones remarkably accurate without introducing aggressive noise reduction.

Major improvements from the past flagship: It avoids that overly processed, hyper-brightened look, retaining natural textures and subtle tones. While handling tricky details like stray hair strands and clothing borders with impressive accuracy, keeping the subject sharp while smoothly rolling off into the background. Whether handling harsh afternoon shadows or softer, ambient indoor light, the dynamic range kept the highlights in check without blowing out the background.

For a device that carries a massive reputation for raw performance and gaming, the camera system on the iQOO 15 proves it's a heavy hitter for mobile photographers, too. It makes you want to keep shooting, looking for that next perfect frame.

What do you think of the edge detection, bokeh effect and color tuning on these? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
