Holiis one of the most popular and important festivals in Hinduism. It celebrates the eternal and divine love of God Radha and Krishna and the arrival of spring after a long winter. It is also a time to forget and forgive, end conflict, and restore relationships.
Holi has been celebrated in the Indian subcontinent for centuries, and poems about the festivities date back to the
th century AD. It is celebrated in the month of March which corresponds to the month of Phalguna in the Hindu calendar.
Holi is not only a festival of colors but also a festival of love. It celebrates the love story of Radha and Krishna, who are considered supreme deities in Hinduism. According to legend, Krishna was black-skinned and Radha was fair-skinned. Jealous of Radha's complexion, Krishna asked her mother why she was not as beautiful as her. His mother told him to paint Radha's face and make her like him. Following his mother's advice, Krishna applied paint to Radha's face. This action became a symbol of their love and loyalty.
Holi is also a spring festival. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of a new season full of life and joy. The colors used in Holi represent the different shades of nature that emerge in spring. The festival also invokes blessings for a good harvest season.
Holi is a festival that unites people irrespective of age, gender, caste or religion. It is a day when everyone is equal under the rain of color. It is a day when people forget their differences and complaints and embrace each other with love. It is a day when people celebrate life with joy.
The celebration lasts for two days.
The first day is known as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi.On this day, people light fires at night to symbolize the victory of good over evil. They also perform rituals and prayers to ward off evil spirits and diseases.
The second day is known as Rangwali Holi, Dulandi, Phagwa or Badi Holi. On this day, people paint themselves with colors, celebrate and enjoy. Children and youth play with dry paints called Abir or Gulal, water guns, water balloons filled with paint solutions and other creative things. You can even find groups on the streets dancing and singing from place to place with drums and other musical instruments.
Holi is truly a festival that reflects the spirit of India: colourful, diverse, vibrant and harmonious.
