Clash of Clans (CoC) is a popular mobile strategy game developed and published by Supercell. The game is set in a fantasy world where players build and defend their own base while attacking other players' bases to gain resources and trophies.

In the game, players start with a small village that they must develop and upgrade over time. They can build and upgrade different structures such as resource collectors, defensive structures, and army camps to train troops.

The types of resources (a.k.a. loot)

There are four main resources in the game: gold, elixir, dark elixir, and gems. Gold and elixir are used to build and upgrade structures and train troops, while dark elixir is used to train dark troops. Gems can be used to speed up building and upgrade times, purchase resources, and other in-game items

Elixir is used for building offensive troops, upgrading troops at the laboratory, and upgrading buildings that improve your offensive capabilities, including the barracks, which unlocks more types of unit; the army camp, which increase your maximum army size; the spell factories, which unlock types of spells and increase spell capacity; and eventually the workshop, which builds siege machines. source: medium.com

These are much more expensive to use than the regular elixir stuff, except heroes, of course, who are free to use but incredibly expensive to upgrade. So much of your looting will be to upgrade heroes and walls.  source: medium.com

Understanding the troops

The game offers a variety of different troop types, including Barbarians, Archers, Giants, Dragons, and many more. Each troop has its own strengths and weaknesses, and players must carefully choose the right troops for each attack to be successful.

Some of the early troops available are

  • Barbarian : A lightweight close range troop that will attack the nearest structure or ground based troop. Requires 1 troop space and can be effective in numbers.
  • Archer : A lightweight ranged troop that will attack the nearest structure. Requires 1 troop space and can attack both ground and air troops and shoot over walls.
  • Giant : A heavy troop that has a large amount of health points and will attack the nearest defensive structure. Requires 5 troop space and can tank damage for lightweight damage troops.
  • Goblin : A lightweight close range troop that will attack the nearest resource structure with a damage bonus against them. Requires 1 troop space and can be effective against full resource collectors storages on the edges of a village that are unprotected by area/splash damage defences.
  • Wall Breaker : A lightweight utility troop with a 40x damage multiplier against walls. Requires 2 troop space and effective when using multiple Wall Breakers to destroy walls to allow your main troops deeper into the village.
  • Balloon : A medium weight flying troop that will attack the nearest defensive structure requiring 5 troop space. It can only attack ground targets with a slow but damaging attack, and will do a small area of effect damage.
  • Wizard : A lightweight ranged troop that will attack the nearest structure or defending air troop. Requiring 4 troop space, the Wizard’s high damage attack has splash damage although if both ground and air targets are nearby, damage will only be done to either ground or air, depending on the type of the primary target.

Each new troop is unlocked by upgrading your Barracks (allow you to train troops to attack your enemies)While the Barracks is upgrading, your troops will train at 50% of their usual speed.

Understanding the defences

Just like the troops, each defence performs a particular role. Understanding the purpose of each defence will help you when planning your village layout as well as when attacking other players.

Some of the early defences are:

  • Cannon : A medium damage, single target defence that can only attack ground based targets.
  • Archer Tower : A medium damage, single target defence that can attack both ground and air based targets.
  • Mortar : A low rate of fire, area defence that can only target ground based targets but knocks back troops when it hits. It is unable to target troops in close proximity to it.
  • Air Defence : A high damage, single target defence that can only attack air based targets.
  • Wizard Tower : A low damage, area defence that can target both ground and air based targets. Its splash damage can easily take out groups of lightweight troops.
  • Air Sweeper : A defence that doesn't do any direct damage but releases a strong gust of air that is able to push air based units back.
  • Hidden Tesla : A medium damage, single target defence that cannot be seen by the attacker until troops are within range of it or 51% of the village has been destroyed. It can attack both ground and air units.

Army Composition

We will begin with army composition. There are three main categories of troops: “tanks,” “brawlers,” and “nukers.”

Understanding  spells

Spells can be used to either boost your troops (through increasing their damage or healing them) or for damaging the structures of the village you are attacking. A number of spells are unlocked throughout the game however most of the early spells will still be a core part of your attacks even at the higher Town Hall levels:

  • Tanks have high hitpoints, but slow damage output. You will want to have these guys up in front taking hits for everyone else. Enemy towers are stupid, and will target the first thing that gets in range, and then keep hitting it until it dies or they die. After that, they target the closest. Tanks are troops designed to withstand enemy tower shots, and to position themselves to get hit first by enemy towers.
  • Brawlers have medium hitpoints, short range, and high damage output. You will want to deploy these midway through the attack to be available to burst through the tough, central core of the enemy base and to clean up straggler towers afterwards. They can withstand a few hits, but they will get ahead of your tanks quickly after deployed, so don’t deploy them too early, or they won’t survive to the core.
  • Nukers have very low hitpoints but very high damage. These absolutely must have a tank in front of them, as they will very quickly die if targeted. However, they are necessary to deal enough damage to take out the enemy base in time to win. Place them behind your line of tanks immediately after the tanks are in place.

  • Lightning Spell : This spell triggers a bolt of lightning that damages buildings within a small radius. Storages, the Town Hall and the Clan Castle are immune to its damage.
  • Healing Spell : The spell heals all troops within an area of 5 tiles. The spell lasts for 12 seconds and heals in pulses every 0.3 seconds so is best deployed on a large group of troops that will be within its area of coverage for the duration.
  • Rage Spell : This spell substantially boosts troop damage and movement speed within an area of 5 tiles. It is best used on your damage dealing troops when attacking high HP structures.
  • Poison Spell : This spell poisons enemy troops within a 4 tile radius. The poison effect damages the enemy troops, decreases their movement speed and their attack rate. It is effective when used against defending Clan Castle troops, enemy heroes or skeletons spawned from Skeleton Traps.
  • Earthquake Spell : This spell damages walls/structures within a 4 tile radius. It is commonly used in conjunction with Lightning Spells to destroy Air Defences. 4 Earthquake Spells can be dropped on the same area to destroy walls. 4 spells will always destroy the walls, regardless of level.

Clan system

One of the most important aspects of the game is the Clan system, where players can join or create a clan with other players. Clans can work together to donate troops, share resources, and participate in Clan Wars where they battle against other clans to earn rewards and increase their clan's ranking.

Clan wars are a special kind of battle that takes at least 5 players on a team to play. Your clan can do a maximum of one war every two days, and they must take players in increments of 5. Each player receives two attacks, and each team tries to 3-star as many of the enemy team’s bases as they can.

Clan games unlock at TH6. This is a weeklong event that occurs in the last week of each month, minus a few days, and it is definitely worth rushing to TH6 to make sure you can participate.

During clan games, all clan members work on a shared pool of missions, each of which gives some number of points. For example, “earn 3 stars in multiplayer for 100 points” or “earn 3-stars using giants for 175 points,” etc. Each player can only get 4,000 points, but to unlock all the rewards, the clan needs go get to 50,000 points combined! Help out!

At the end of the games, everyone who completed at least one game will be able to select what prizes they want. Note that resource rewards from clan games go to your castle, not storage!

Magic Items are boosters for your village. Each one fulfils a different role from boosting production/training times to instantly completing an upgrade.

Game Mechanics

There are 3 main game mechanics to understand when starting out:

  • Attacking

Although it is possible to gain resources for upgrades from your resource collectors, you can gain far more from attacking other players and stealing their resources. In order to do this, you will need to train an attacking army and then search for an opponent. It is possible to skip opponents you are matched with, although each match does incur a small cost of gold.

  • Defending

Just as every village you attack is another player and take their resources, others players are able to attack your village and take your resources once your shield and guard have run out. In order to help minimise how much they are able to take, you are able to build defences and walls to protect your resource storages. You are able to design a layout to defend your village and stronger layouts can help minimise how much of your resources are taken.

  • Upgrading

You can increase your offensive and defensive capabilities by upgrading your structures and troops. This can increase your defensive structures damage and HP, the amount of troops you are able to take to a battle, increase the damage and HP of your troops and even unlock new troops.

Once all upgrade are complete or you decide you want to upgrade your Town Hall, you will be able to unlock additional upgrade levels, troops and heroes to use.

Miscellaneous Tips

  1. Focus on upgrading your resource collectors early on to maximize your resource income.
  2. Use the single player campaign to practice attacking strategies and earn extra resources.
  3. Join a clan to donate and receive troops, as well as participate in clan wars.
  4. Upgrade your Town Hall as soon as possible to unlock new buildings and troops.
  5. Build and upgrade your walls to protect your base from enemy attacks.
  6. Use traps and bombs to defend your base and surprise attacking troops.
  7. Plan your attacks carefully, using a mix of troops and spells to target specific defenses.
  8. Use the shield system to protect your base after an attack and avoid retaliation attacks.
  9. Keep your builders busy at all times by constantly upgrading buildings.
  10. Save up gems to buy builder huts, as they can greatly speed up your progress.
  11. Use your heroes in battles to deal heavy damage to enemy defenses.
  12. Upgrade your laboratory to unlock and upgrade powerful troops and spells.
  13. Use your clan castle to store extra troops for defense and attack.
  14. Use lightning spells to take out clan castle troops during attacks.
  15. Use wall breakers to break through walls and gain access to enemy defenses.
  16. Keep an eye on your troop capacity to avoid wasting troops during attacks.
  17. Use heal spells to keep your attacking troops alive during battles.
  18. Place your defensive structures strategically to cover as much of your base as possible.
  19. Use air defenses to protect against enemy air attacks.
  20. Keep practicing and experimenting with different attacking strategies to find what works best for you.

Overall, Clash of Clans is a fun and engaging mobile strategy game with a loyal player base. Its addictive gameplay, variety of troops and spells, and strong clan system make it a game that many players keep coming back to for years
