Optical Image Stabilization is referred to as OIS. It is a part of the camera that instantly improves the vibration and shaking when taking pictures or videos. OIS is prevalent in digital cameras and camcorders, but it is almost universal in mobile phones. It operates by directing the picture's path from the lens to the image sensor. This is accomplished by determining how the lens should move in order to compensate for the camera's movement using sensors like gyroscopes. After that, the lens module is often moved up and down or sideways using magnetic motors.

Working Principle

The gyroscope and small motors in the phone are used by an OIS-based camera to move the camera lens or sensor. The primary camera lens is positioned such that it can rotate around an axis. Shifting left and right or up and down can be accomplished using two axes. Four-axis OIS is a feature of high-end camera systems that allows the lens to be moved in all four planes.

As an example, if you hold your phone to your right while moving, the OIS technology will correct the shake by shifting the camera lens to the other side. It adjusts the lens using electromagnets and sensors and a gyroscope to detect movement.

Difference between OIS and EIS

OIS and EIS stand for optical and electronic image stabilization, respectively. OIS, a mechanical image stabilization technique that uses motors to move the lens and detect camera movement, stabilizes the photographic process.

EIS is a software solution that makes use of software level optimization to accomplish what OIS does.
