WHAT IS A COOKIE?

It is a small piece of identifying information saved to your browser when browsing through different websites.

It is of 2 types:

  1. First-Party Cookies - Originates from the website on which you are already on. These perform various tasks that help the website function. Eg: Saving your login Session, retaining website settings that you had set, etc.
  2. Third-Party Cookies - These cause a bit of controversy as these are the ones involved in ad tracking. The ad displayed on the website will also put a cookie in your system that will follow you around on the web, tracking your activities to serve you with relevant ads.

LAWS REGARDING IT

Ad-Tracking makes everyone uncomfortable. There have been laws passed in recent years that try to limit it to deal with it. Most popular is the e-Privacy Directive also known as EU Cookie Law. According to this law, it's illegal for websites to place cookies on your device until you click the Accept OR Agree button. On the surface, this looks like a pretty good way to protect users' privacy.

FISHY ACTS DESPITE THE LAW

This too comes with some glaring issues. According to the law, the website should give a user-friendly way to manage your cookies, but that's not the case in real-life.

Example:

  1. Accept All is big Bold & Colourfully highlighted, but the reject button is presented in such a shady way that sometimes one can't even notice it.
  2. Some don't even show any pop-ups. In those, you will need to dig into the privacy terms and look into a number of menus to find a way to reject cookies.
  3. Some don't even let you get into the website until you press Accept All are called Cookie Walls, don't even comply with the EU Cookie Law.
  4. Some Reject All buttons are so poorly designed that they block all cookies, hence breaking certain websites.

SOLUTIONS

  1. Your browser also has options to Block Third-Party Cookies automatically.
  2. There are actually browser extensions available on the desktop browsers such as “I don't care about cookies”, which can auto dismiss cookies pop-ups.
  3. It's recommended not to visit those sites which force you to accept cookies & Not Accept cookies wherever it's possible.

These are pretty decent ways to protect your privacy without much of the hassle otherwise.

I hope I was able to explain everything about cookies Accept All Permission in a simple & easy way. Like/Dislike the way you felt about the same. Pour in your suggestions & feedback in the Comments section below. Catch you guys in the next one.
