  • ICF Coaches: ICF coaches have been the backbone of Indian Railways for decades. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai manufactures these coaches. They are made of conventional steel and have a robust design. You can recognize them by their characteristic window grills and the "chakri" design on the exterior.

  • LHB Coaches: LHB coaches, on the other hand, are a more recent addition to the Indian Railways. Linke Hofmann Busch, a German company, manufactures them. LHB coaches are made of stainless steel, which makes them lighter and more durable compared to ICF coaches. They have a sleeker and more modern look, with smooth exteriors and larger windows.
  • Safety and Comfort: Both LHB and ICF coaches prioritize passenger safety and comfort. However, LHB coaches have several advantages in this regard. LHB coaches have anti-climbing features that prevent coaches from climbing  over during accidents. They also have advanced suspension systems, which result in a smoother and more comfortable ride, reducing fatigue during long journeys.
  • Speed and Stability: LHB coaches are designed to operate at higher speeds compared to ICF coaches. Their aerodynamic design reduces air resistance, allowing trains to achieve higher speeds while maintaining stability. This makes LHB coaches suitable for express and premium trains that operate at higher velocities.
  • Maintenance and Cost: LHB coaches require less maintenance compared to ICF coaches due to their stainless steel construction. The corrosion-resistant material ensures a longer lifespan for LHB coaches, reducing maintenance and repair costs over time. However, the initial manufacturing cost of LHB coaches is higher than that of ICF coaches.
  • Transition from ICF to LHB: Indian Railways has been gradually phasing out ICF coaches and replacing them with LHB coaches. LHB coaches offer improved safety, comfort, and speed, making them the preferred choice for new train introductions thats why the Indian government has plans to replace all ICF coaches with LHB coaches by 2025.
