In a recent support document, Microsoft has confirmed that it will be discontinuing its virtual assistant, Cortana, on Windows. The standalone Cortana app, which many users may not even be aware of on their PCs, will no longer be supported starting later this year.

The decision to retire Cortana comes shortly after the unveiling of Windows Copilot at Microsoft's Build 2023 conference. Despite initial speculations, Microsoft's Aaron Woodman clarified that Windows Copilot is not intended as a replacement for Cortana, as the two serve different purposes.

Microsoft assures users that AI experiences will still be available in Windows 11, with specific mentions of Windows Copilot, the new Bing, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and voice access in Windows. The latter feature allows users to control their PCs using voice commands.

The fate of Cortana has been evident for some time. Originally introduced as a virtual assistant for Windows Phone 8.1 in 2014, it expanded to desktops with Windows 10 in 2015.

As Microsoft embraces its AI-focused strategy, the company is now shifting its focus to Bing Chat and Copilot. With an emphasis on AI and the upcoming GPT-4 technology, Microsoft aims to provide advanced assistance and capabilities beyond the capabilities of a traditional voice assistant like Cortana.

With the official retirement of Cortana, Windows users can expect to see an increased emphasis on alternative AI-driven experiences that offer enhanced functionality and integration within the Windows ecosystem.
