A New Era of Broadcasting

The D2M technology, aptly named NexGen Broadcast, is the result of collaboration between the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) and the innovative telecom startup Saankhya Labs. This groundbreaking technology harnesses the capabilities of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and edge computing to seamlessly integrate with the Over-The-Top (OTT) ecosystem, ushering in a new era of television broadcasting.


Imagine a scenario where mobile users can enjoy their favorite TV shows, educational content, and emergency alerts directly on their smartphones, regardless of whether they have a data connection. This convergence of broadcast and broadband could democratize access to information and entertainment, particularly in a country like India with its vast smartphone user base.


The Benefits of D2M Broadcasting

The proposed D2M technology brings with it a multitude of benefits that could reshape the landscape of content delivery and consumption:

Wider Reach: With India boasting nearly 800 million smartphone users, compared to around 210-220 million TV households, the potential for expanded viewership is staggering. This technology opens up access to TV content for millions who may not have had it before.

Educational Empowerment: D2M broadcasting could play a pivotal role in disseminating educational content to remote and underserved regions. Students could access lectures, tutorials, and educational programs on their mobile devices, bridging the educational divide.

The Roadmap to Reality

The journey towards D2M broadcasting has already seen significant progress, with IIT Kanpur's publication of a comprehensive whitepaper on the D2M broadcast and 5G convergence roadmap for India. The institution has even set up a live Proof-of-Concept (PoC) using low-power Broadcast Radio Heads (BRHs) on cell towers in Bengaluru, showcasing the feasibility of the technology.


However, challenges and considerations remain. The proposal could potentially impact data revenue for telecom operators, leading to concerns from stakeholders. The upcoming meeting involving officials from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), IIT Kanpur, and representatives from the telecom and broadcast industries aims to address these concerns and pave the way forward for this innovative technology.


As India inches closer to the rollout of 5G networks, the prospect of Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) TV broadcasting holds immense promise. By converging traditional broadcasting with broadband capabilities, this technology could transform the way we consume information, entertainment, and educational content.
