The Indian Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the expansion of the Digital India programme. This initiative will raise funds of Rs. 14,903 crore over a period of five years starting from FY2021-22 to FY2025-26.


The primary objective of this expansion is to strengthen cyber security efforts with a special focus on strengthening the capabilities of India's Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).


The Digital India programme, which was initially introduced on 1 July 2015, has been a success and is now set for further expansion.


Key points of the Extended Digital India Program (FY2021-22 to FY2025-26):

Upskilling: Over 6.25 lakh IT professionals will be retrained and upskilled through the FutureSkills Prime programme.


Information Security Training: Approximately 2.65 million individuals receive information security training through the Information Security & Education Awareness Phase (ISEA) program.


Expanded Mobile Services: The Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) application/platform will be enriched with 540 more services, bringing the total to over 1,700 services.


Expanded supercomputers: The National Supercomputing Mission will introduce 9 new supercomputers to complement the existing 18 and increase computing power.


Language Translation Tool: Bhashini's multilingual AI translation tool will be expanded to cover all 22 planned languages.


Modernization of the educational network: The National Knowledge Network (NKN), which connects 1787 educational institutions, will undergo modernization.


Digital Authentication for MSMEs: DigiLocker's digital document authentication feature will be extended to MSMEs and other organizations.


Support for Startups: Support will be provided to 1,200 startups in tier 2/3 cities.

Artificial Intelligence Centers: Three centers of excellence in artificial intelligence will focus on health, agriculture and sustainable cities.


Cyber awareness for students: Cyber awareness courses will be offered to 12 million college students.


Cybersecurity Initiatives: Several new cybersecurity initiatives will be launched, including tool development and integration with the National Cyber Coordination Center.

In short, the expansion of the Digital India programme, approved by the Indian Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a strategic step to further harness the benefits of technology for the advancement of the country. The programme's emphasis on strengthening cyber security, improving digital services and developing technology skills reflects a comprehensive approach to driving India's digital evolution.


Commenting on the announcement, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology (IT) Ashwini Vaishnaw said:


The announcement of the Digital India program with a budgetary allocation of ₹14,903 crore is to revitalize India's digital economy, improve digital accessibility of services and strengthen the country's IT and electronic infrastructure.
