This program will commence from October 1 onwards and will aims to enable Indian auto manufacturers to get their vehicles tested by Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.
Its full form is Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) fir testing the vehicles and aims to enhance road safety by elevating vehicle safety standards for up to 3.5-tonne vehicles in India.
The Program is applicable to type-approved motor vehicles of M1 category less than 3.5T GVW. This is a voluntary program in which the base variants of a given model shall be tested
Based on the performance of the car in the tests, the vehicle will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5, for adult occupants and child occupants.Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and accordingly make their purchase decision.
🔸The car manufacturer nominates a vehicle model.
🔸The Bharat NCAP team will visit the manufacturing facility of that particular vehicle and will select the base variant through random sampling.
🔸The selected vehicle will then be dispatched to the Bharat NCAP testing centre by the manufacturer.
🔸The selected vehicle will be crash tested and the process will be witnessed by representatives of the car manufacturer and the Bharat NCAP team.
Test results will be compiled and shared with the car manufacturer followed by the Bharat NCAP standing committee approval. After the standing committee's approval, the star ratings and crash test results of that particular vehicle will be published by Bharat NCAP and the certificate will be issued by the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT).

🔸Side impact
🔸Side pole impact tests.
The cost of testing a car under the Bharat NCAP programme is around Rs 60 lakh, whereas a similar test would require around Rs 2.5 crore if done overseas. This is a landmark step towards empowering our consumers for being able to make a better choice for buying safer cars," - Nitin Gadkari.
Though the Bharat NCAP is similar to the Global NCAP, it takes into account the existing Indian driving conditions and regulations.
Conducted by a private company, and funded by different charities and car companies across the world, the Global NCAP tests are based on 2013 Latin NCAP protocols. They cover only a limited range of tests and the vehicles get a star rating for adult safety and a star rating for child safety post-tests.
