Hi Questers!

We revealed our series of travel threads around India's many tourist places. @SahilJadhav chose a stunning setting to launch the series with a beautiful place Pune.  I'll now take you to my hometown of Alibag, often known as Mini Goa, where I was born and raised.

Come along as we discuss the history of Alibag, its amazing sights, and its mouthwatering cuisine.

Alibag: Where the Waves Embrace Serenity.

Alibag is a popular tourist destination located on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, India.

History of Alibag

some of the notable events in the history of Alibag:

  • 2nd century BCE: Alibag comes under the rule of the Satavahana dynasty.
  • 13th century: Alibag comes under the control of the Delhi Sultanate.
  • 17th century: Alibag becomes part of the Maratha Empire. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built Kolaba Fort.
  • 18th century: Alibag becomes an important trading center.
  • 19th century: Alibag comes under British rule.
  • 1947: Alibag becomes part of the state of Bombay.
  • 1960: Bombay is divided into two states, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Alibag became part of the new state of Maharashtra.

Modes to Reach Alibag:

  • By Road: Alibag is approximately 100 kilometers from Mumbai, and you can reach it by car or bus. The journey takes around 3-4 hours from Mumbai.
  • By Ferry: You can also take a ferry from Mumbai to Alibag. The ferry ride is quite scenic and takes about 20-30 minutes.

Sightseeing Wonders:

  • Alibag Beach: This is the main beach in Alibag and a great place for relaxation and water sports.
  • Kolaba Fort: A historic sea fort accessible during low tide via a causeway.
  • Siddheshwar Waterfall: The waterfall is named after Lord Siddheshwar, a revered deity in the region. According to legends, the waterfall holds spiritual significance and was a place of meditation for ancient saints.
  • Kanakeshwar Forest: Ideal for nature enthusiasts, it offers trekking trails and a Shiva temple.
  • Nagaon Beach: Known for its water sports and clean shoreline.
  • Akshi Beach: A peaceful beach for those seeking a quieter atmosphere.

What to Eat:

Alibag is known for its fresh seafood. Some of the popular dishes to try in Alibag include:

  • Prawns Koliwada: This dish is made with prawns that are marinated in a spicy batter and then deep-fried.
  • Pomfret Fry: This dish is made with pomfret fish that is fried and served with a variety of chutneys.
  • Fish Curry: This dish is made with fish that is cooked in a spicy curry sauce.
  • Crab Masala: This dish is made with Crab that is cooked in a spicy homemade masala.
  • Vada Pav: This is a popular Indian street food dish that is made with a deep-fried potato patty that is sandwiched in a bun and served with chutneys.
  • Popti: Popti is a one-pot harvest special dish made with seasonal vegetables, tubers, beans, some local spices, and/or chicken and eggs.

In addition to these dishes, Alibag is also known for its fresh fruits and vegetables. Some of the popular fruits and vegetables to try in Alibag include:

  • Khandale Kande: This is a type of white onion that is grown in Alibag and is known for its sweetness.
  • Cashews: Alibag is also known for its cashews, which are considered to be some of the best in India.
  • Mangoes: Alibag is also known for its mangoes, which are grown during the summer months.
  • Coconut: Fresh coconut water and coconut milk.

Best Eating Joints and Restaurants:

  • Sanman Restaurant: This restaurant has been serving delicious Konkani-style seafood for over 30 years. Some of the must-try dishes include the prawns koliwada, pomfret fry, and fish curry.
  • Kiki's Cafe & Deli: This cafe offers a variety of international and Indian dishes, as well as a wide selection of desserts. The ambiance is relaxed and casual, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family.
  • Shree Datta Snacks: This small eatery is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. It serves a variety of delicious snacks, including vada pav, samosas, and bhajiyas.
  • Boardwalk by Flamboyante: Located in the Flamboyant Hotel, this restaurant offers sea-facing dining with a variety of cuisines and a bar to enjoy your favorite drinks.
  • Hotel Fulora: The menu at Fulora Hotel features a wide variety of seafood dishes, including prawns, fish, and lobster. The restaurant also offers a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Tips for visiting Alibag

  • The best time to visit Alibag is from October to May when the weather is pleasant.
  • If you are planning to visit during the peak season (December to February), it is advisable to book your accommodation in advance.
  • Alibag is easy to navigate. To see every corner of the city, select among taxi services, partly operational auto-rickshaws, and local buses.
  • If you are planning to visit the forts, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
  • Alibag is a popular spot for seafood, so be sure to try some of the local dishes
