Introduction

Navratri is a nine-day festival that celebrates the nine forms of Goddess Durga, the supreme mother goddess in Hinduism. Each day is dedicated to a different aspect of her divine energy and power. Today, we will focus on the seventh day, which is also known as Maha Saptami or Saptami Tithi which is dedicated to goddess Kalratri.

Who is goddess Kalratri?

Goddess Kalratri is the seventh form of Goddess Durga and the most fierce and powerful one. Her name means "the one who is black as night" or "the one who destroys time". She has a dark complexion, untidy hair, four arms, and rides a donkey. She carries a sharp sword and a deadly iron hook in her hands, and makes a terrifying sound.

She is also known as Chamunda, the slayer of the demons Chanda and Munda. She is the destroyer of ignorance, darkness, evil forces, and negative energies. She also removes the fear of death and grants liberation to her devotees.

Significance of Day 7

The seventh day of Navratri is significant because it marks the victory of Goddess Kalratri over the demon Raktabeej, who had a boon that whenever his blood drops on the ground, a clone of him would emerge. To prevent this, Goddess Kalratri drank his blood and swallowed his clones, and finally killed him. She also killed the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha, who tried to attack her.

The worship of Goddess Kalratri is supposed to invoke the Sahasara Chakra, which blesses the devotees with niddhis and siddhis.

By worshipping Goddess Kalratri on this day, we seek her blessings to overcome our fears, doubts, and ignorance. She helps us to face our challenges with courage and determination. She also enlightens us with divine knowledge and wisdom.

Celebrations

  • On the seventh day of Navratri, devotees celebrate by performing a special puja (worship) for Goddess Kalratri.
  • They offer her red flowers, jaggery, honey, and sesame seeds.
  • They also chant her mantra.
  • They wear dark blue clothes, which symbolize the mysteries of the cosmos and the depth of knowledge that Goddess Kalratri possesses.
  • They also sing devotional songs and dance in her honour.
  • Some devotees also observe a fast on this day to please her.
