Introduction

In this thread, I will tell you about one of the most auspicious days of Navratri, the eighth day or Maha Ashtami. This day is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Mahagauri, the eighth form of Goddess Durga. Let me tell you more about her and why this day is so special.

Who is Goddess Mahagauri?

Goddess Mahagauri is the epitome of purity, beauty and grace. Her name means "the great fair one" as she has a radiant complexion that shines like a pearl. She is also known as Shwetambardhara, meaning "the one who wears white clothes".

According to legend, she was once Goddess Parvati, who performed severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. During her penance, she faced many hardships and her body became dark due to dust and dirt. When Lord Shiva accepted her as his consort, he washed her with the holy water of the Ganges and restored her original beauty. Thus, she became Mahagauri, the fair and flawless one.

She rides a bull and carries a trident and a drum in her hands. She has four arms and her right hand is in the gesture of blessing (Abhaya Mudra) while her left hand is in the gesture of granting wishes (Varada Mudra).

Significance of Day 8

Goddess Mahagauri is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri because she represents the power of transformation and purification.

Goddess Mahagauri is believed to bestow her devotees with wealth, happiness and prosperity.

She also removes all their sufferings and sins and grants them peace and wisdom. She is the ruler of the planet Rahu, which can cause obstacles and delays in life. By worshipping her, one can overcome the negative effects of Rahu and achieve success in all endeavors.

Celebrations of Day 8

Maha Ashtami is one of the most important days of Navratri as it marks the victory of good over evil.

On this day, devotees perform various rituals and ceremonies to please Goddess Mahagauri and seek her blessings.

Some of these are:

  •  Kanya Puja: This is a special puja where nine young girls are invited to one's home and treated as incarnations of Goddess Durga. They are offered food, gifts and respect as a way of honouring the divine feminine energy.
  •  Sandhi Puja:This is a puja that takes place at the juncture of Ashtami and Navami tithis (lunar days). It is believed that at this time, Goddess Durga killed the demons Chanda and Munda with the help of Goddess Chamunda. This puja is considered very powerful and auspicious as it symbolizes the destruction of evil forces.
  • Durga Ashtami Aarti:This is a devotional song that is sung in praise of Goddess Durga and her eight forms. It expresses gratitude and devotion to the Goddess and seeks her protection and guidance.
  • Coconut Bhog: This is a special offering that is made to Goddess Mahagauri on this day. Coconut is considered sacred as it represents the three eyes of Lord Shiva. It is also a symbol of fertility, prosperity and abundance. Offering coconut to the Goddess fulfills one's desires and wishes
  • The colour associated with Maha Ashtami and Goddess Mahagauri is purple. Purple represents royalty, dignity and spirituality.
