History :

The tradition of trick-or-treating has its origins in Scotland and Ireland, where it can be traced back to at least the 16th century. This tradition, known as "guising," involved people going from house to house on Halloween, donning costumes, and performing for food or treats.

In North America,

Historical accounts from the 19th century in Scotland and Ireland describe individuals in costume reciting verses at households in exchange for food .

While the practice of going from house to house in costume has a long history in Scotland and Ireland, it's only in the 2000s that the expression "trick or treat" has become common in these regions. Prior to this, children in Ireland typically used the phrase "help the Halloween party" when visiting homeowners.
