This manufacturing endeavor will be undertaken in collaboration with Noida-based contract manufacturer Optiemus Infracom Ltd, and the joint venture will be named Bharat Innovation Glass Technologies.
The joint venture will be known as Bharat Innovation Glass Technologies.
John Bayne, senior vice president and general manager of mobile consumer electronics at Corning Inc, mentioned that this marks the first instance of cover glass being manufactured in India, catering to both local and international Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) assembling their devices within the country.
This move aligns with the government's "Make in India" initiative, as the technology is adaptable and can accommodate increased production. The decision to manufacture in India is driven by Corning Inc's strategy to diversify its supply chains and reduce its reliance on manufacturing in China.
This has led to a growing trend of diversification across various Asian countries to ensure proximity to customers.
Notably recognized for its 'Gorilla Glass,' Corning is exploring the possibility of seeking financial incentives for the production of electronic components and semiconductors through this joint venture.
Cover glass is a crucial element in the production of mobile phones and is currently imported into India for the lamination process with display panels. Bayne explained that Corning's decision to establish local manufacturing will likely attract more companies to invest in India.
As the venture expands, Corning also has intentions to introduce glass-sheet manufacturing and glass melting capabilities in India.
