Welcome Mickey:

The genesis of Mickey Mouse goes beyond a mere character; he stands as an iconic symbol for the Disney brand. However, Mickey's inception was a result of necessity rather than initial design. Created to replace Walt Disney's earlier success, Oswald the Rabbit, Mickey emerged when Disney faced contractual disputes with Charles Mintz, a film producer linked to Universal Studios.

Oswald, initially crafted by Disney for Mintz, garnered immense success, prompting Disney to request a budget increase.

Instead, Mintz insisted on a 20 percent pay cut, leveraging the fact that Oswald was Universal's property and that many Disney employees had already signed with his new contract. Unwilling to agree, Disney concluded his association with Universal after completing the final Oswald comic of his contract.

Left with only two dedicated animators, Ub Iwerks and Les Clark,

Disney embarked on a fresh start. This ordeal taught him the importance of owning all character rights produced by his company.

Inspired by a tame mouse at his Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri, Disney initially named the character Mortimer Mouse. However, under the influence of his wife, Lillian, he changed it to Mickey Mouse, giving birth to an enduring legacy.

Mickey's first attempts to capture audiences with cartoons like "Plane Crazy" and "The Gallopin' Gaucho" proved unsuccessful in attracting distributors.

It wasn't until the release of "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928,

in New York—co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks—that Mickey Mouse found both success and distribution. Serving as Mickey's debut, this cartoon marked the beginning of a cultural phenomenon.
