Hello Questers,

Indonesia's state-owned utility company, PLN, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar, have successfully inaugurated a 192MWp floating solar plant at the Cirata hydropower reservoir in West Java.

President Joko Widodo marked the occasion of this eco-friendly initiative, set to power 50,000 homes while offsetting 214,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Situated on a 250-hectare area of the Cirata reservoir, this project, Masdar's debut in the Southeast Asian market, is anticipated to generate approximately 300 GWh/year.

Notably, it stands as Indonesia's largest floating solar venture and holds the distinction of being the largest such project within a hydropower reservoir, boasting a water depth of 100 meters, water level fluctuation of 18 meters, and a 50-meter difference in water bottom elevation.

Sungrow FPV, a Chinese company, provided the innovative floating solar solution, featuring specialized high-load-bearing anchor blocks designed for the unique geological conditions of the project site.

The project underwent rigorous scrutiny by third-party audit organizations, including DNV, RINA, INNOSEA, and obtained validation from Indonesia's Dam Safety Committee (DSC).

In an encouraging development, Masdar and PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) recently formalized a memorandum of understanding to progress into Phase II of Cirata, aiming for an additional 500MW capacity.

This expansion aligns with regulatory changes from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing in Indonesia, allowing a maximum of 20% of water coverage for renewable energy purposes

This solar plant, located near a village, supports 200 jobs and has facilitated the opening of a school for local children.

It illuminates 50,000 houses while emitting zero carbon, contributing to nature conservation.

In summer, water conservation is ensured, and extensive research ensures the solar panel's eco-friendliness, avoiding harm to fish, fisheries, and water quality.

The technology is conscientiously deployed, leaving space for nature.

How would you envision implementing such technology in India? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
