Chhath Puja is a Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, Surya, and Chhathi Maiya (Usha), who is believed to be the consort of Surya. This festival is widely celebrated in the northern regions of India, particularly in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Nepal.

Here are some key aspects of Chhath Puja:


Timing: Chhath Puja is typically observed six days after Diwali, on the sixth day ofthe month of Kartika  (October-November) in the Hindu calendar.


Duration: The festival spans four days, and it involves various rituals and customs

Rituals:

  • Nahay Khay (First Day):ahay Khay (First Day): Devotees take a dip in a holy river or pond and bring the holy water home to clean their houses.
  • Lohanda and Kharna (Second Day): Fasting begins on the second day, and devotees eat only once, preparing a special prasad (offering) of kheer and fruits.
  • Sandhya Arghya (Third Day): Devotees, mostly women, stand in water and offer arghya (offering) to the setting sun. This is considered the main day of Chhath Puja.
  • Usha Arghya (Fourth Day): On the final day, devotees wake up before sunrise and offer arghya to the rising sun.


Fasting: Devotees observe strict fasting during Chhath Puja, abstaining from food and water for an extended period. The fast is broken after the morning rituals on the final day

Chhath Ghat: The rituals are often performed on the banks of rivers, ponds, or other water bodies. These locations are known as "Chhath Ghat."


Significance: Chhath Puja is considered a way of paying homage to the Sun God for sustaining life on earth. It is believed to be a way of seeking blessings for the well-being, prosperity, and longevity of family members.

Traditional Songs: Folk songs and traditional Chhath songs, known as Chhath geet, are an integral part of the celebration. These songs are sung during the various rituals and add to the festive atmosphere.


Chhath Puja is a vibrant and significant festival, particularly in the regions where it is widely celebrated. It holds cultural and social significance and is marked by a sense of community and devotion among the participants.
