Hello Questers

I hope everyone is aware of the recently released trailer for an upcoming movie with the title yet to be announced. It showcases an early version of Mickey Mouse playing a villainous role, and I was genuinely surprised to see a childhood friend taking part in a horror film. Let's dive into the details and explore this intriguing development.

The Mouse is Out

Steamboat Willie marked the early appearances of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.

While being their third collaboration, it was the first cartoon released. The cartoon depicts a more ominous Mickey, resembling a rat, leading a boat and creating musical instruments from other animals.

Interestingly, the initial projects revealed are seemingly low-budget and campy slasher films – a theme not entirely unprecedented. After Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain in 2022, within a year, the character, now without his trademark red shirt, was engaging in a high body count in the microbudget production Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.

In the preview of "Mickey's Mouse Trap," helmed by Jamie Bailey, a figure donning a humorously undersized Mickey mask instills fear among a gathering of youths at an arcade.

The trailer features text proclaiming, "A place for fun. A place for friends. A place for hunting." The ominous message concludes with the declaration, "The mouse is out."

Director Jamie Bailey stated in industry publications, "We just wanted to have fun with it all. I mean, it’s Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse murdering people.

It’s ridiculous. We ran with it and had fun doing it, and I think it shows." The film currently lacks a set release date.

The second project, directed by Steven LaMorte, known for a horror parody of The Grinch (titled The Mean One), explores a tale set in New York City.

The logline for the untitled film, as shared on LaMorte's Instagram, reads, “A late-night boat ride turns into a desperate fight for survival in New York City when a mischievous mouse becomes a monstrous reality.”

LaMorte expressed in a statement published by industry outlets, “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror.” As of now, the movie is yet to commence production.

With the lapse of the 95-year copyright, the public is granted access only to the initial renditions of Mickey and Minnie, not the more familiar character designs.

Disney stated, "We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright," anticipating the characters entering the public domain.

Director LaMorte informed Variety that the producers of his film are collaborating with a legal team to avoid conflicts with Disney.

In an effort to steer clear of any issues, they plan to refer to their formidable rodent as Steamboat Willie instead of Mickey Mouse.

“We are doing our due diligence to make sure there’s no question or confusion of what we’re up to,” he explained.
