Qualcomm Technologies has announced the latest advancement in its Snapdragon XR2 lineup with the introduction of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, set to power a groundbreaking collaboration between Google and Samsung. The focus of this cutting-edge technology is to deliver more realistic and detailed experiences in the realm of extended reality (XR).

One notable enhancement over its predecessor, the XR2 Gen 2, is the support for up to 4.3K per eye resolution at an impressive 90 frames per second. This upgrade ensures spectacularly clear visuals, catering to a range of use cases such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops. The XR2+ Gen 2 maintains other key specifications, including a 12ms full-color video see-through and Wi-Fi 7 support.

In collaboration with Google and Samsung, Qualcomm aims to revolutionize the mobile industry and create a best-in-class XR experience for Galaxy users. Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the joint commitment to innovation.

"We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung on the future of immersive and spatial XR," said Shahram Izadi, Vice President of AR at Google. "We're excited for the Android ecosystem to take advantage of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2's capabilities and enable new experiences."

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 also boasts partnerships with several OEMs, with at least five manufacturers actively working on devices powered by this advanced chip platform. Notable partners include HTC Vive, Immersed, and Play for Dream. The platform promises a 4.3K resolution per eye, surpassing the Apple Vision Pro's 4K resolution per eye.

Compared to its predecessor, the new chip platform offers a 15% faster GPU, a 20% faster CPU, and a significant 2.5x improvement in GPUspeed while drawing 50% less power. The increased number of supported cameras, now at 12, enables full-color video passthrough with an impressively low latency of less than 12ms.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is not just about visual advancements; it also brings a notable 8x improvement in on-device AI performance. Supporting the latest Wi-Fi standard (Wi-Fi 7) and features like foveated rendering for optimized power consumption, this platform is poised to redefine the possibilities of mixed-reality experiences.

As technology enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the collaboration between Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 represents a significant leap forward in the world of extended reality, promising users immersive, detailed, and visually stunning experiences.
