Elon Musk's company, Neuralink, has reached a major milestone by successfully implanting its device in a human for the first time. Elon Musk shared a message on X saying that the patient is recovering well. Neuralink is on a mission to develop a brain implant that would help individuals with severe paralysis control external devices through nerve signals. After receiving FDA approval in May, the company began recruiting patients for its first human study.

The initial Neuralink product called Telepathy allows users to control phones or computers simply by thinking. The ultimate goal is to empower people who have lost limb functionality like Stephen Hawking to communicate more efficiently

Neuralink's PRIME Study, which stands for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface, focuses on a fully implantable brain-computer interface (BCI). The technology aims to help paralyzed individuals control external devices using their thoughts. The R1 robot places the fibers of the N1 implant in the movement control area of the brain. The original goal of BCI is to allow people to control a computer cursor or keyboard with just their thoughts

Elon Musk announced the Neuralink clinical trial, expressing optimism about early results, including promising detection of neuronal spikes. This technology has the potential to revolutionize communication for individuals with spinal cord injury quadriplegia or ALS, offering a generalized brain interface to address unmet medical needs. The early adopters will be those who have lost the ability to use their limbs with a vision of achieving communication speeds surpassing even the fastest typists or auctioneers, as demonstrated by the late Stephen Hawking.
