Camel: Capturing moments, one camel ride at a time.

About

Camels have long been domesticated and, as livestock, they provide food (milk and meat) and textiles (fiber and felt from hair). Camels are working animals especially suited to their desert habitat and are a vital means of transport for passengers and cargo.

Detail

The average life expectancy of a camel is 40 to 50 years. A full-grown adult dromedary camel stands 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) at the shoulder and 2.15 m (7 ft 1 in) at the hump. Bactrian camels can be a foot taller. Camels can run at up to 65 km/h (40 mph) in short bursts and sustain speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph).

  • The camel is used for several purposes for which its role is essential. It is used as a beast of burden for transporting goods and people as well as for providing milk. Milk is often the only regular food source for its owners. The camel's meat, wool and leather are also widely utilized.
  • They can go two or three days without water. Bactrian camels eat practically any vegetation that grows in their arid environment. If forced by hunger, a camel will eat fish, meat, skin, and even bones. At the Zoo each camel eats about 13 –17½ pounds of pelleted feed and grass hay per day.
