After the severe cold, the month of March gives a sweet feeling of cold in the morning and heat in the afternoon. These days the appearance of forests, groves and gardens seems somewhat changed. When we are busy preparing for Holi, the flowers in nature are also ready to blossom. Semal Trees attract the attention of nature lovers with their colorful style. During these days the deep Red Color of the big bowl-shaped juicy flowers of Semal remains at its peak.
Seeing Semal inspires to play Holi. Nature has been playing this Holi for thousands of years. The deep connection between the Semal tree and Holi is also that the stick that is used on Holi is made of Semal or Castor tree only. There is a belief that the thorns on the trunk of the Semal tree are considered a symbol of evil and are burnt. As soon as spring takes hold, by March this leafless, dry looking tree is laden with thousands of cup-shaped dark red flowers. Earlier people used to play Holi with colors obtained from Semal or Palash flowers, which were beneficial for our skin.
Semal is a medicinal tree and is also called the silent doctor. This plant is most cultivated in India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Australia and Africa. Every part of this tree is used to treat diseases. It is used in the treatment of asthma, diarrhea, wounds, leucorrhoea, anemia and skin problems.
