The Government of Gujarat is seeking proposals for a study to see if it's possible to build an F1 race track in GIFT City, Gandhinagar. GIFT City, located on the Sabarmati river, aims to boost India's international business by attracting foreign investment. This opportunity comes at a good time as both governments and international companies want to tap into India's growing interest in motorsports.
The proposed location is GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat [India to get a second F1 track? Gujarat Government invites proposals]. This is a developing financial and tech hub, suggesting the track could boost economic growth and attract investment.
Although India has a few race tracks like Kari Motor Speedway and Madras Motor Race Track, none are suitable for hosting an F1 Grand Prix. Currently, the Buddh International Circuit in Uttar Pradesh is the only one capable of hosting such events. The first Indian F1 Grand Prix took place there in 2011, but it stopped in 2014 due to a tax dispute. The last major international motorsport event in India was MotoGP Bharat in 2023 at the same venue.
Having a second top-quality track would make India a regular on the global motorsport scene. But the project is still in the planning phase, with no budget or completion date set. Additionally, there are concerns about Formula E's future in India after a disagreement with the Telangana Government. This disagreement led to the cancellation of the Hyderabad E-Prix and caused financial losses for both Formula E and the city. Hopefully, Western India will soon have its own F1 track to cater to motorsport fans in the region.
Remember, this is still in the preliminary stages. There's no guarantee the project will be finalized, but it's an exciting development for Indian motorsport enthusiasts.
