Many years ago, farmers believed the number of spots a ladybug had would tell them about the upcoming harvest, according to Wonderopolis(Opens in a new window). A ladybug with seven or fewer spots meant there was a great harvest ahead.
The seven-spotted lady beetle is carnivorous. Both the adult and larval stages feed on insects harmful to plants, such as aphids and scale insects (Anonymous 1997). Adults can be known to eat up to 100 aphids a day (Arnett Jr., et al 1980).
The number of spots on a ladybird indicates what species it belongs to, not, as commonly believed, how old it is. To identify the ladybird species accurately, the colour and number of spots needs to be taken into consideration.
The Seven-spotted Lady Beetle can occur in a wide range of habitats, found in gardens, grasslands, broadleaf forests, and mixed forests. Herbaceous habitat with high aphid abundance seems to be preferred. Native to Europe and eastern Asia. Introduced to North America, and now can be found across North America.
