Singapore's game publisher Garena is reportedly in process of fully localising its India operations before launching the blockbuster video game Free Fire in the country. According to a report by Economic Times, following the government's nudge for over seven months, Garena is finally moving its game server to India to be installed in Yotta Data Services' Navi Mumbai premises.
"Yotta is working with Garena's HQ (headquarter) team on testing the server, which is showing high throughput required for handling streaming workloads with least redundancy," a person close to the company reportedly said. "It is important that performance metrics are adequately tested before the game goes to market because esports tournaments put many ecosystem players at stake and therefore should be devoid of any technical snags," the source added.
Incidentally, Garena was set to launch in September 2023 in India, but the game's launch was postponed. โWe are delighted by the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from our Indian community to the announcement of the launch of Free Fire India. To ensure we can offer the best possible experience to all of our Free Fire India fans from the start, we will postpone the launch by a few more weeks. In addition to refining the gameplay, we are taking some time to fully complete our localisation of the Free Fire India experience. We would like to thank our Free Fire India community for your support and hope that you will bear with us while we work on bringing you the ultimate battle royale experience,โ posted the company on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Garena is set to relaunch Free Fire India almost two years after the game was banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, citing the Section 69a of the IT ACT, 2000. The game was banned along with 50 other China-linked apps on national security grounds.
The battle royale game had over 40 million of its 75 million globally monthly active users in India in January, according to analytics firm App Annie. In fact, 'Garenaโs Free Fire: Illuminate' was the most popular app to be banned in India in February 2022.
