About the Film

The movie features a captivating soundtrack by the legendary A.R. Rahman, with heartfelt lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil. Filming took place over a few short months between December 2022 and March 2023. The film had its big premiere in Mumbai on April 8th, 2024, landing on Netflix shortly after on April 12th. Critics absolutely loved it, with many saying it marks a major comeback for director Imtiaz Ali.

The Story

This film tells the story of a singer named Amar Singh. Born into a Dalit family in Punjab, Amar worked in a socks factory as a teenager, his heart yearning to make music. Frustrated, he breaks free and starts networking within the Punjab music scene. He eventually lands a gig working for the established musician Jinda, who uses Amar's lyrics without credit.

Then, a twist of fate – Jinda is late for a major performance, and the restless crowd is on the verge of rioting. Desperate, organizers push Amar Singh onto the stage. Using the stage name "Chamkila" for the first time, his raw lyrics and powerful voice ignite the audience. He becomes an overnight sensation, overshadowing Jinda and skyrocketing to fame. But with fame comes harsh challenges, and Amar must confront both the love and the fury his music creates before his life is tragically cut short.
