Get ready for a celestial treat! The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is coming, promising a breathtaking display of shooting stars. Here's everything you need to know:

When to Watch:

The Eta Aquarids are active from April 19th to May 28th each year. In India, you can see the Eta Aquarids meteor shower during the peak activity period, which is between May 5th and 6th, before dawn.

Where to Watch:

This shower is best viewed from the Southern Hemisphere, where observers can expect to see up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. But don't despair if you're in the Northern Hemisphere! You can still enjoy the show, with rates of around 30 meteors per hour.

Cosmic Connection:

The Eta Aquarids are leftovers from none other than the famous Comet Halley! When this icy wanderer journeys around the Sun, it sheds dust and debris along the way. Earth runs through this cosmic trail in May, and the tiny particles slam into our atmosphere, burning up as meteors.

Prime Viewing:

For the best possible experience, head out for the shower before dawn. Darkness is key for spotting those meteors. This year, the new moon falls conveniently just after the peak, providing ideal dark skies. Find a location away from city lights, lie down on a blanket or sleeping bag, and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. Patience is rewarded – the more you gaze, the more meteors you're likely to see!

So don't miss this chance to witness a cosmic light show courtesy of Comet Halley. Bundle up, grab a blanket, and head outdoors for the Eta Aquarids meteor shower!

Viewing Tips:

  • Escape the City Lights: Light pollution can significantly reduce your meteor count. Head out to an open area with a clear view of the night sky.
  • Find a Comfortable Spot: Relaxing is key! Set up a blanket or lawn chair and look up.
  • Be Patient: It takes time for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Allow 30 minutes or so for optimal viewing.
