Every year before the monsoon's first rains, the forest around Maharashtra is filled with fireflies after sunset, and you can view them easily. You must be patient and switch off your torch lights for a few minutes. Although fireflies are visible in many areas during the pre-monsoon period for most of the year, they are easier to spot. We have arranged a few events here; you can watch them glow and go about their mating season before the monsoon season starts. Kajwa Festival 2024 will start from May 14th to June 21st.
Firefly watching is best when it is far from the city’s light pollution. One can expect a lot of peace and quiet, and the least amount of light and sound disturbances in the area. Sounds like the beginning of a very good short getaway from the city.
The Western Ghats region is an exceptionally good habitat for these bioluminescent beetles. Yes, fireflies are beetles. The gentle and rhythmic flicker of these fireflies are actually the bugs communicating, to attract the opposite sex and respond.
These bugs start to come out in millions just before the monsoon and, for about two months, they live to mate and lay eggs.
Things to keep in mind: firefly population is decreasing because of loss of habitat. Once their habitat gets paved or disturbed by human interference, they just stop existing. Fireflies are not migratory, so when you are visiting these places to watch them in action, be mindful about not disturbing their habitat.
Purushwadi is a beautiful destination set close to the village of Pachnai, Maharashtra. The place is noted for its fireflies population and is also the starting point for the Harishchandragad Trek.

Another firefly paradise, Bhandardara is a pretty and lesser-known hill station in Maharashtra set at an altitude of 3000 ft. The place is all about natural beauty and makes for a perfect weekend escape for Mumbaikars. serene landscapes, it provides the perfect retreat for those seeking a weekend getaway.
As night falls, Kothaligad Fort becomes a playground for fireflies. The place is famous for its night trek during winters and summers.
