Netflix Plans to Replace Windows App with Progressive Web App, Ends Offline Viewing
In a significant shift, Netflix is set to retire its Windows 10 and Windows 11 app in favor of a progressive web app. While the new version promises enhanced streaming quality and access to live events, it comes with a trade-off - the discontinuation of offline viewing on Windows devices.
Previously, users could download their favorite shows in up to 1080p (FullHD) resolution on the Windows app. However, a recent support document update indicates that downloads will soon be limited to mobile and tablets.
Moreover, the revamped Netflix app for Windows will introduce support for the 'ad-supported' tier, allowing users to access content at a lower price point with intermittent commercial breaks. This tier, however, may not offer all titles due to licensing restrictions.
Currently, the Windows app doesn't support the ad-supported tier, displaying a message indicating incompatibility with the user's plan. Nonetheless, Netflix assures users that those with automatic updates enabled on the Microsoft Store will seamlessly transition to the new version once it's available.
For users in regions like India, where the ad-supported tier isn't available, the impending changes mean a return to mobile devices for offline viewing. While the exact release date of the new app remains unclear, this transition signals a significant shift in Netflix's strategy for Windows users.
