Six planets of the Solar System, including Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus, are set to line up in a rare alignment known as a planet parade on June 3 and 4, 2024.
Venus will be the only planet absent from this alignment. This alignment, also known as a large alignment, occurs because the planets orbit the Sun on a flat plane called the ecliptic.
This alignment will be visible in the pre-dawn hours and can be seen with the naked eye, although binoculars or a telescope may be needed to see Uranus and Neptune.
Similar alignments with the same planets are expected on August 28, 2024, and January 18, 2025, with a full planetary alignment of all eight planets occurring on February 28, 2025.
These events provide a rare opportunity for planet-watchers to observe multiple planets in the sky at the same time.
Tools such as Time and Date, Stellarium, and Sky Tonight can help viewers determine the rise and set times of the planets, as well as their positions in the sky during the alignment.
Overall, the upcoming planet parade and other alignments present a unique opportunity for sky watchers to witness the planets of the Solar System aligning in the sky, providing a rare and awe-inspiring sight for those who take the time to observe it.
